Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. As a young girl, her father was a carnival barker which left Ruth's mother with no choice but to work as a cleaning lady and waitress in order to feed the family. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts in which she went to school. She left school after two years, to go into acting. The path she chose was not without obstacles. In New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she longed for was not available. The next position she was offered was the "hat check" woman at a nightclub before she gave up and relocated to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. She earned money by performing during the daytime as an usherette. She has also graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
